Documenting a Community under Threat
An interview with Qiane Matata-Sipu

Qiane Matata-Sipu; a photographer, writer, and storyteller who lives in her papakāinga of Ihumatao in Mangere. In 2018, she won the prestigious New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year - Progear Photostory Award for the portfolio of images captured of the people involved in the ongoing land protest at Ihumatao. Documenting her community has always been central to Qiane’s work and she’s just launch Nuku Women, a multi-platform work that is changing the narrative for and about kick-ass indigenous women.
